Another stupid(?) question about sound cards and colgate

I looked through the modules subdirectories for a module or modules for sound
card support, but couldn't find any with obvious names. Are they there, and if
so what name should I look for. If they are not there, are they or their
sources somewhere on the CD's? One book I have suggests looking under
/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound, however, under /usr/src/linux-2.0.18 I find only
the subdirectory include.

P.S. I did look at the sound HOWTO but I felt my problems were at a more
fundamental level. I couldn't find any discussion of sound cards (other
than whether a particular card is supported or not) in the user's guide.
