Don't worry - it can all be done, but there is a lot to grasp all at once!

As far as the 'networking' stuff is concerned, the thing to remember is
that when you are running PPP you *are* networking. Network links come in
all sorts of shapes and sizes, not just Ethernet cards! So you do indeed
need the 'networking stuff' installed.

However, you do NOT need to register with the NIC and get your own IP
number(s) unless you really want to. The far end of your PPP link will
'loan' you an IP number for the period of the connection (this is what is
called Dynamic IP number allocation).

As for your kernel, the PPP-HOWTO provides an overview of the
configuration required to recompile.
