If I understand what you want, correctly... mpage(1) should do this.
It will take a postscript or plain text file, and output postscript
that will print up to 8 (virtual) pages per page.

It can also be used to print double sided... i.e., select all odd,
print, then select all even and print on the backside.

One caveat... I've had problems with mpage's marigns when using a
postscript file (plain text works just fine) as the original
document.  I've a DeskJet 520, so that may be part of the problem.  In
any case, I manged a work around with the command line options that
let you fiddle with the margins.
