PPP and Sound

Yes, yes, yes, yes... I know there are a million and 1 FAA's and the
HOWTO on the PPP, but I am very very new at this and having a bear
of a time getting this to work. 

I have tried now some 10 different scripts for PPP and cant seem to get
it to work. I just got off irc not to long ago and was told that in order
to get PPP to work I would need to recompile the kernel. WHOA! Ya 
lost me there. 

I was also told that I would need to install all the NETWORK stuff as 
well in order to use PPP. I do not have an IP # of my own as well as a
domain name of my own. So at the install portion of NETWORK I 
skiped it. Did I make a mistake? Do I need to dole out the bucks to
internic for a domain name and IP # to use PPP? 

Sorry to seem to lost but the FAQ's I have read use so many terms that
I am not accustom with.

Thanks for any help anyone may be able to lend me...
