Please help.

Recently, I decided that it would be a good move to increase the amount of
pty/tty pairs on my system from the former 64 to the new standard, 256.
Now, I installed the newest rpm of MAKEDEV that I could find (2.2-5) and
merrily executed cd dev ; ./MAKEDEV -v pty. Everything seemed to work
fine, and I even booted the server just in case.

Then I was shown what a cruel place the world can be. Just as I was
rejoicing in my new, vast abundance of ptys, I tried "w". Surprise,
surprise... the ttys of all users were displayed fine, but w couldn't
display the process info (the WHAT-column). "ps" could, but it had trouble
identifying the ttys of the running processes (a question mark replaced
the controlling tty field).

Since then, I've been trying to track down the cause of the problem,
without success. I've travelled far and wide, searched for the holy wisdom
amongst several enlightened gurus, visited the Temple of the RedHat
Mailing List Archives, inquisited prophets in IRC, but the answer to
this dilemma remains a mystery. Any suggestions?

Oh, yeah. The major numbers of the new ptys are 3, and minors are of
number 2, as compared to the former pty/ttys, which all were of major
number 4. Are these significant?

This is an example of the old ptys:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 4, 128 Oct 28 14:15 ptyp0
and the new ptys, then:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 2, 0 Oct 28 14:34 ptyp0

And here are the corresponding tty entries, first the old one:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 4, 192 Oct 28 14:15 ttyp0
and, finally, the new one:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 3, 0 Oct 28 14:34 ttyp0
