no reverse video in joe

I'm using joe as my standard editor. If I "mark" a block it doesn't
appear in reverse video, though it can be moved, copied etc. Is this a
bug in joe or is it something to do with my terminal? The same thing
happens in both X and standard terminal.
Incidentally, in the jpico version of joe the block command doesn't work
