To trace system calls and events, "strace" is great,
however, I still can't find a way to filter its output
and put it in a more human-readable form: it displays
_lots_ of (meaningless?) garbage among readable data.

You can also try DDD debugger, I think it's a Motif-based
front end for GDB.
