To Erik: thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
To answer your question, I have an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI adaptor. The 1024
cylinder boundary should not be a problem, since Linux (or at least the fdisk
utility) sees the disk (a Quantum Atlas 4.3Gbyte wide SCSI) as having
255 heads 63 sectors 522 cylinders. In addition, I am using the same partitions
as were used for my Rembrandt installation, so if there were a cylinder problem
it should have showed up there. When I did hack into the system, I found that
the Lilo install in the update had proceeded as far as removing lilo.conf,
which I reinstalled and ran Lilo. Since I had used an old (1.2.13) boot dist
(the only one I have which allows me to boot rather than install), this was
probably dangerous. After several more attempts at completing the update, Lilo
from the Rembrandt install is now partially removed -- I get LI only when I try
to reboot. At present I have used the Install option on your boot disk to get
access to fdisk, changing the partition marked bootable from sda2 to sda1 so
that I can at least boot NT (on sda1). Sorry I do not have a record of error
messages from when the old Lilo allowed me to get part-way into the boot, but
as you know Lilo spews forth 2 or 3 screens of messages, and the only way I
have to capture them is with a pen :-(.
