I solved my own problem (yeah!) but I don't think this ever should have
happened. Others beware. I suspect that updating to a new pamconfig rpm
is what hosed me.
Upon mounting Colgate's / from a Slackware /, I found that /etc/pam.conf
was unusually short, containing entries only for "OTHER" and "DEFAULT"
services. The timestamp was September (i.e., before release). Oddly
enough, there was also a -much- longer pam.conf.rpmsave timestamped about
the time I remember updating pamconfig via rpm. So I preserved pam.conf
and mv'ed pam.conf.rpmsave to pam.conf and rebooted to Colgate. Voila! I
can log in.
I don't know jack about PAM, and I'd rather not have to. Could someone
please tell me what happened in this case, and more generallly what
.rpmsave files are all about?
Thanks,
Kyle Ferrio
