This is not really an answer to your question but rather a comment
about Epson. I installed an 850N on a Novell network this week, and I
was disappointed to find that it included drivers for OS/2 -- but not
for Linux (or any *nix, for that matter). We need to start petitioning
Epson to start supporting *our* OS! It seems that fully half or more
of the "how do I set up my printer" questions are for one Epson Stylus
model or other.
That said, the install was not terribly straightforward even on the
supported platforms.
