This is an effect of kernel modules.

To your /etc/conf.modules add the line

alias net-pf-5 off      # Forget AppleTalk 

(Note: I am at Red Hat 3/kernel 2.0.22  - just downlaoding the 4.0 fixes 
prior to installing).
