Since that's an older machine, the bios probably cannot boot
Linux if Linux is after cylinder 1023. Is that the case?
How many cylinders does the large disk have according
to DOS fdisk? According to the BIOS? According to Linux fdisk?
If all three numbers agree, you are happy.
It was possibly a mistake to create the Linux partitions using
DOS. I would use a Linux diskette to change the partition
type of the linux partitions to 6, then use DOS fdisk to delete
those same partitions, then let Linux create them again
during the installation of Linux.
The reason W311 is slow now is that your Linux partitions
still have DOS in their boot sectors. The only way to
wipe that out is to let DOS delete those partitions.
