The real GNU emacs comes with Redhat. Some prefer xemacs

GNU emacs but is very small. GNU emacs can emulate
EDT, Crisp or vi. But a true lover of EDT, Crisp or vi
will not like an emulator.

You could leave your Linux machine on, and use cron jobs
to go online for 3 minutes and fetch your mail (with fetchmail)
once a day. To save power the monitor can be off.
