I had formerly run RH 5.0 for serveral months, but after I really
screwed up my system with Partition Magic I decided wipe out my Linux
partitions and start over again with a copy of RH 5.1 that came with a
Linux book that I bought.

My RH 5.0 installation ran MetroX to configure X. This distribution of
RH 5.1 doesn't seem to come with MetroX. I'm having some problems when
I try to startx. Is there anyway that I can get a print out the
messages that are produced?

startx > errmsg.txt

doesn't work.

I'm thinking about rewiping my Linux parititions installing RH 5.0 (so
that I can use MetroX to configure X) and then installing RH 5.1 as an
upgrade. Would the version of MetroX that came with RH 5.0 work with RH
5.1?

Also, I have one of those Logitech Mouseman mice with the little scroll
wheel thingie and the thumb button. Should I configure this as a
Mouseman or as a bus mouse? I don't recall which one I used
previously. My system detected a mouse on port psaux, whatever that
is. The mouse is plugged into a PS/2 style port, not the traditional
nine pin serial ports. Formerly I was able to use my mouse in bash and
in X. My understanding is that the fact that my mouse doesn't work is
highly likely to be causing X to crash.

Before I wiped out my Linux partitions I did do a tar backup of my /etc,
/home, /root, and /usr/local directories. Would my X configuration and
files that configured my mouse be in these directories, and where?
Could I just restore these configuration files and overwrite the current
ones?

Also, how can cheapbytes or other sources sell RH5.1, or whatever. I
can see how they can distribute all the GPL'd software, but it seems
that Red Hat could prevent them from using the name Red Hat, isn't this
name trademarked?
