Greetings to one and all.
I have a question about partioning the drive for LINUX and WFWG3.11.
Machine config as follows:
Intel VLB MB w/128k cache with a AMD 486DX4-100
16 MB FP True Parity Memory
Sony 2x CDROM
1.4 M FDC
Quantum 2.5 Gig HD (master)
Quantum 210 Meg HD (Slave
STB Horizon Video board w/ 1 meg (VLB card)
DTC 2778 Multi-I/O (IDE, Flop, LPT1, COM1, COM2, Game)
(VL Bus is set to 33 MHZ and jumpers ar set for correct HD
thruput)
Generic I/O (LPT2, COM3)
SB - 16 Sound Card
2nd IDE card set to secondary controller
All in a Full-Tower Case with 250 Watt PS.
LPT1 is setup Bi-Directional and uses IRQ-7
COM1 is 03f8h and IRQ 4
COM2 is 02f8h and IRQ 3
COM3 is 03E8h and IRQ 5
COM4 is disabled
Game port on Multi-I/O is disabled
Floppy controler set to Primary
IDE set to Primary
Sound Card is a Sound Blaster 16
No CDrom installed to this card (propritaty drive only - disabled)
Game/MIDI port set to MIDI
The Hard drive is partioned with fdisk in dos.
Main partion is 528 MB and is drive C: it has MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows
for Workgroups 3.11 and untill I get my LINUX setup (properly) is NET
access for me.
The extended partion is 1.5 Gig and has a 528 MB DOS partion on it. The
rest of the partion I had told Fdisk that it was 840Mb and 128Mb (set
aside for LINUX).
After formating the DOS partions and installing my programs and OS from
the old 210 (now drive D:) I then check to see if it worked (but not
NET)
I then started to install RedHat 5.0 (I am supposed to get 5.2 or
greater for Christmas or Birthday, but lets get everything running
first). I used DISKDruid and Formatted the 128 as a SWAP Partion and the
840 as NATIVE.
When I used the LET'S SEE WHAT THIS SUCKER WILL TAKE option, It
swallowed itself when installing the Vixie-crom install with a Signal
11. I got around this with installing in smaller chunks. This has left
aprox. 200-300 Meg free.
Hopefully I have give enough info on the background.
Untill I get the system running on LINUX, I need to keep the WFWG on the
system.
Did I do the partioning correctly or do I need to make the Extended
smaller for the second DOS dirve on the 2Gig and then ??
The originial drive was the 210 Meg andg everythine ran fine in WFWG.
Now stuff runs slower and I keep getting in winsock COMM ERRORS
(Overrun) and tried everything except removing the 2gig and making the
210Meg the Master again.
Sorry for the long post, but better to give more infoemation (in some
cases) then less.
As soon as I get a good stable system, and can get software installed to
run my small PT Custom Photo T-Shirt business I will setup a WFWG
machine (486-66) for my 2 year-old son to learn (play)on.
TIA for any and all input.
