A Bunch of Newbie Questions

When attempting to untar a file nothing happens... I download a file under
NT, and FTPed it to my 5.1 Redhat machine. I unzipped it fine, but when I
run "tar -xvm filename_tar" nothing happens (I've let it sit for 10
minutes). I have tried fewer options (-x) with the same results.

When using X, in the control panel, I click on "Kernel Configuration".
Nothing hapens.

In Midnight Commander, I am unable to view a file. What do I have to do
when I would like to use the internal viewer to look at a text file, and how
can I launch an external editor?

When xscreensaver starts, my system will lock up with a blank screen after a
few minutes. I haven't sat and timed it, but it usually happens when I'm
away from the machine. I have noticed that without the screensaver, the
screen will blank itself in a few minutes of non-use. Is there a conflict,
or a but (I noticed that there is a package on RH's web site, but have yet
to download, and learn how to install it). I just read that
CTRL-DEL-BACKSPACE will end X, and have not yet tried that when the system
is locked, but I have tried CTRL-ALT-DEL, and ALT-F1 thru F6 with no
response.

I'm using a dual Pentium box with 96 MB ram, but it seems to run sluggish.
What do I have to do to ensure I am using both CPUs and all available RAM?

I have an external Motorola Bitsurfer Pro TA as well as an internal
Bitsurfer Pro ISA. I have the external connected via a serial switch to
both my NT and Linux box, so that when I am ready, I can start working on a
PPP connection from the Linux box, but I hear the internal TA is faster. Is
there support for such a beast. It uses 2 IRQs and 2 I/O addresses, so I
can't just pretend that it is a fast external modem.

And while on that topic, why would I need specific ISDN support with the
external TA? It responds to standard Hayes commands. As long as I send the
correct init string, I should be off and running. Shouldn't I?

And last of all... I would like to set this machine up for IP Masq, and
will read the HOWTO when I finish getting PPP up and running. Is there such
thing as a firewall/proxy/packet filter that I could use to protect myself
from intrusion? Something someone as green as I am could understand? Since
my ISP allows me to, I leave the line up for hours at a time. This way, I
only pay a dime (a nickle for each channel) for the call, as I am in band A,
and there is no charge for the connect time, only the connection.

Thanks in advance...
