strange "core" file in my home directory

I know this is a seriously newbie kind of question, but I am puzzled by
the sudden appearance of a file in my home directory (/home/carneym) on
my otherwise perfectly happy RedHat 5.1 system. The listing is:
-rw------ 1 carneym carneym 11403264 Nov 24 06:41 core
I guess I can spare the 11MB, but the file kinda spooks me.
Can anybody shed a little light on this probably not-so-mysterious "core"
file.
