pine can get mail right off of the mail spool of the machine it's on, or
it can be used as a pop/imap client. to change the operating mode, it's
just a matter of changing the inbox path in the pine config. i don't
remember the syntax, but it's in the pine docs somewhere.

pine 4.0x. it's my favorite out of all the ones i've used, windows or
linux
