 RedHatters,
As I mentioned in a previous post, I am new to Linux and struggling
(happily, but still struggling) with the huge amount of information
available about the redhat dist. My latest concern is one of security. I
have read the posts that have dealt with this topic, and still find
myself needing help in the security area. Is there a source of
information out there that is written with a newbie in mind that will
tell me how to secure RH5.1? I have been to the RedHat errata site and
looked at the general and intel errata.. sigh, I am completely
overwhelmed by the volume of security fixes there. This brings up my
second question, Is there somewhere that I can download all the fixes
for 5.1 broken up into large rpms ?
I saw someone mention 85mb of security fixes, so it would be nice to
find them in 10mb clumps. I read (same post, I believe) that would be
much easier to upgrade to 5.2 and forget about trying to download all
the fixes. This is an option for me, but I just bought 5.1 a month ago
so I would like to look at other options also.
I have been following the thread " 'root' login vs. 'standard user'
login" and must admit that
I rarely log in as anything but root. I see where problems would arise,
but I run into permission problems a lot when trying to do relatively
mundane tasks. For instance, I use the network config. gui to connect to
the internet and it seems as if I can't have access to this as any user
but root... just silly things like that are keeping me in root status, a
habit I wish to change.
Thank you for all the knowledge,
 -Tom
