been there recently :)

do

insmod /lib/modules/<output of `uname -r`>/fs/isofs.o

then try access your cdrom. if this works, you compiled your kernel with 
these as modules, and you can iether recompile answering yes (instead of m ) 
or put the insmod(s) in your startup scripts.
