I like to mess with window managers. I have used both versions of CDE,
afterstep, XFCE, enlightenment, KDE, and a few I probably forgot.
I used KDE for about a year, and dropped it because it was too
bloated and I never used any of its features. I switched back
to XFCE, but even that was too bloated.
I liked blackbox. Very simple.
Now I use wmx. Very simple. Very nice (for my tastes). No Icons,
no toolbar. No configuration to do. Everything you need to know is
documented in one README file. Multiple desktops of course, and
a couple of ways of switching desktops. Cool accelerator keys to
move around windows without touching the mouse.
I like to have a button bar to launch frequently used programs
(gimp, xv, CBB, etc). So I made my own by simply writing a
very short Tcl/Tk program which makes a button bar to do that.
(Ask, and I will give you the program.)
A screenshot would show the usual stuff. Cool backdrops. Terminal
windows have backdrops too, and decent fonts. It looks good.
