Termination problems can be very elusive. With bad termination
you may be able to boot and run for awhile and see all devices too.
Some things work fine, then suddenly errors happen at odd times.
Sometimes termination problems can cause bad disk block errors.
You need exactly two items terminated for each scsi card,
and they MUST be at both ends of the cable. The internal
and any external cables count together as one cable,
with one end outside the box and one inside.
If you have 0, 1, or more than 2 items terminated, you have
bad termination, but things might sort of work, until you are
doing something critical.
Some adaptec controllers are famous for being picky about
termination.
Does the scsi bus activity light stay on when it locks up?
Hopefully you have an LED connected to the scsi card.
If that light stays on, the problem is definitely scsi cable,
termination,
scsi card configuration, or the tape drive and disks are not compatible.
If the light stays on the scsi bus has locked up and you have no
access to disk, so you probably just have to ctl-alt-del or reset.
