What error message (detail please) does it give you
when you type lilo as root?
Please email your /etc/lilo.conf if you would like
to fix up booting from the hard drive.
Also send the output of fdisk -l too.

Tar should work ok if you don't use the p option.
If that fails, use one of the other tar options to make it
ignore uid and group id: tar --help|less

This means you do not have c++ installed. c++ support
is not present in the gcc rpms. Instead of gcc, you might
install the egcs rpms instead, including
egcs-1*.rpm
egcs-c++*.rpm

Don't use the tar p option - that tells it to restore original uid,gid,
which it can't for some reason. If that is not enough, there are
some other tar options that affect uid,gid: tar --help|less
