Here is how I set up PPP.
It works exactly the same for any external modem
(ISDN or analog) or any internal analog modem.
Tested on RH 5.2, and RH 5.1 with
ALL rpms updated from updates.redhat.com
USE LINUXCONF, the "System Configuration" icon in /usr/bin/control-panel.
Do not hand edit any text files.
I did not use netcfg.
When its working, then check text files - trust me.
Control|Control Panel|Control Service Activity:
Enable at least inet, kerneld, network, portmap
Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Routing and gateways:
Do not run routed for ppp.
Do not set any routes or default routes for ppp.
Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Nameserver Specification:
Set up at least one nameserver.
Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Host Name Search Path:
Select "hosts,dns"
Config|Networking|Client Tasks|PPP/SLIP/PLIP:
hit add,ppp,accept:
TURN ON PAP!
fill in 4 blanks including /dev/cuaX
hit customize
hardware tab:
enable all except escape control characters
in PPP options consider using "noipx"
communication tab:
enable debug
ERASE ALL EXPECT, SEND TEXT BOXES!
networking tab:
enable 'default route' and 'restart link',
disable 'escape ctrl chars'
'no connection'=5,
other text boxes are empty
PAP tab:
Note: secret means ISP password.
Hit accept, save, ok, ... at each level to save and exit.
To start connection, type /sbin/ifup ppp0 (for first ppp setup)
To stop connection, type /sbin/ifdown ppp0
Starting at bootup may encounter problems
Note, instead of typing ifup, ifdown, ...
run the X app called usernet from
the usernet rpm from the RH CD.
