After doing some more backups and experimentation with the
tape drive I have (HP Surestore DAT) and a SCSI (Adaptec 2920C)
card, I've noticed that frequently (but not always) the system
will lock up solid (i.e., have to turn the system off) after the
backup has been going on for a while.
For instance, I was just backing up the system earlier today, trying
out KDAT (a tar wrapper), part of the snapshots for KDE (possibly
will be in KDE-1.1) and about two hours or so into the backup the
system stopped cold. I couldn't do anything with the keyboard or
the mouse.
I've also noticed this happening before even when I use tar
standalone and with Arkeia's demo -- and I don't think that
it's software-related.
I wonder if it is driver related - I'm using the 2.0.35 kernel with
patched modules for the scsi driver (latest ones as of two or three
weeks ago).
I've seen it complete a backup as well, so I'm not at all sure why
it would lock up in this fashion.
