sound setup problem

Ok, I check the backlogs for redhat-list for the last few weeks and
didn't find an answer for this:
I was running 5.0 and sndconfig worked fine at finding my sb 16 pnp and
setting things up. Did a fresh system install for 5.2 after it couldn't
do a good upgrade ( and moved over things like /home by hand )
However I tired sndconfig again and it finds the card, autoconfigures it
- but when it tries to open /dev/audio it kicks back and "error opening
/dev/audio" and kicks me into the manul config screen - tried that and
still /dev/audio has problems. I check /dev/audio and it's there, there
are no execute bits set, but none of the other /dev entries have them
either.
Was loged in as root.
Any suggestions?
