You might want to keep your eye on Arachne.  It does Mail 
(as well as graphical web browsing) and it's currently being 
ported to Linux.  I have been using Arachne (for DOS) for the 
last year and am very happy with it.  All it really lacks is
multi-tasking (which will be added in the Linux version).
