Best way is to put the command line that starts rc5des at the
end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. That ensures that upon boot
the program gets run.

If you see the cpu usage in top, I think that it combines the
nice CPU usage with everything else. In /proc, you'll see that
a certain percentage is used in nice, and you'll see an "N" along
with the other flags in ps's output (or top's).

I would tend to discount the fact that the cpu usage seems to
be high when running such a nice'd app. I've noticed similar behavior
too, when running programs at a low nice level.
