There are only two environment settings I know about for
/var/spool/mail. They could be changed in /etc/profile and
/etc/passwd.
If you have existing users on the machine and you change this in
/etc/profile you have to change it everywhere in /etc/passwd.

This isn't true in practice -- what we've missed out is Stradivarius's
