Exactly what does your dmesg output look like, the portion that
pertains to the HP35480A ?
I just had one die on me a few months back, not too unusual for this
drive. I have had three or four of them in about 10 years. I now have
a C1599 which I like much better.

Not sure what rewoffl is but the commands:
mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
mt -f /dev/st0 offline
mt -f /dev/st0 status

Should all work.

If the above don't work you have a problem or /dev/st0 is not set
right. The device file st0 should look like, to be used by a user:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root disk 9, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/st0

Or for root only use:

crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/st0

Also check this page for the documents and FAQ's on this drive along
with the led info.

ma> I get a message back from the command of 'I/O error'.

This could merely be a wrong permssion problem with your device file
or could mean the drive is dead.

BTW, this drive is no longer made or supported, I think you can still
get it repaired but it will usually cost you more than its worth,
usually more than $300.

Hope this is of some help,
