That's incorrect. The 8.4 GB limit is a CHS limit with a BIOS that does
CHS translation.  The limit without a translating BIOS is 504 MB.  The
EIDE LBA limit is in the TB (terabyte) range.

Since Linux uses LBA mode for drives that support, that entire 11 gig
drive is usuable.  Just make sure your /boot partition is below the
8.4 GB or 504 MB limit. (The 1024 cylinder limit for translating and
non-translating BIOSes.)
