Since a few people recommended "upgrade the kernel", I should add
that I did install all recommended upgrades to the original RedHat 5.1
distribution, which includes an upgrade to kernel 2.0.35. So the
problem I described is with that kernel, not the 2.0.34 shipped with 5.1.
