Right, the point is that I'm trying to compile programs that other people have
written, and I'd prefer not to have to edit every makefile that I download.

About that enviroment variable...  Is this an either/or situation for the
compiler?  I.e. if I export C_INCLUDE_PATH=/foo/headers in my /etc/profile,
will the compiler ONLY look in /foo/headers, or will it look there first, or
last?
