Yes.

Yes, it would be easier for a newbie, but X would be an overkill for a
printserver. You could read through the printcap manpage and the printtool
docs and configure your own printer or you could have someone tht uses the
same printer as you do send you their printcap and the files in printspool
that apply to that printer.
