Hello, fellow Redhat-ers!
I've been running Linux since Version 0.97, but I finally decided to
throw some money at Redhat and buy an Official Installation. After all,
Redhat has been waving the Linux flag a lot and is largely responsible
for its growing corporate respectability.
Unfortunately, results were less than spectacular. Before I installed
Redhat, I tried an older Caldera package they sent me (for free) called
Caldera Lite. It installed and ran fine. Then I tried to install Redhat.
The installation seemed to go smoothly - it found all my SCSI drives,
my network card, etc. and seemed to install correctly. But when I tried to
boot, it resulted in many general protection faults, finally locking up
altogether. Re-installed Caldera - ran fine. Re-installed Redhat - crashed.
Since it looked like the kernel itself ( I tried booting from a floppy-based
kernel I had lying around and it seemed to work OK), I compiled a 2.0.33
kernel at work and installed it, setting up lilo so that I could boot either
kernel.
Sure enough, the compiled kernel ran fine. Since I had done a "basic" kernel
(no modules, no sound, etc.) I compiled a new one on the Redhat/2.0.33 hybrid
and lilo'ed that in as well. Now everything works fine. But the kernel Redhat
supplied still crashes.
Has anyone else had these problems? I tried writing to the e-mail support,
but it rejects my message for some reason (it just says "check the registration
number..."). The only thing unusual about my setup is that I'm using "all-SCSI":
all my hard drives and CDROM are on one Adaptec 2940UW card. It's never been a
problem with Linux before, though. (Amusing aside: Windows 95 cannot find my
CD-ROM - Redhat installs better than Windows!)
