It could be as simple as your ISP hanging up on you based on inactivity.
Though 5min seems a bit short for that...  You could try cron jobing a
simple ping to occur once every 4min or so to keep the link alive.  My ISP
has such a time / activity limit set up, though for 15 minutes or so.
