Remove the Maxblast, make partitions within the BIOS limits,
install Linux. Be sure to let it make a boot diskette during the install.
Then add this line at the top of /etc/lilo.conf:
linear
It's one word all by itself. Then run lilo again, to install
the modified /etc/lilo.conf where it needs to go.
When you reboot, you should be able to make more partitions
using fdisk, and use mke2fs to make filesystems in them,
and then mount and use them.
Yes, old bioses can be a pain.
