Color and transparentcy in an xterm?

I have seen some screen shots of transparent Xwindows (where the background
shows through) and I have seen screen shots of xterms where different files
were colored differently based on extension.
Where can I find information on this? (a pointer to a site or fax is fine)
I have a new linux box here that is actually able to run x (as opposed to
my seven linux servers) and I have started to play around a little.
Right now I am using xfce (nice btw). I own the CDE for Linux, but his is
actually faster and easier to use.
