I apologize for the length of this message, but I want to get all
information into the open right from the start.
I am installing RH5.1 from CD. When formatting partitions (specifically
sda5), the OS terminates with a Signal 11.
The machine was an NT 3.51 and 4.0 machine for several years. The disks
have been scrubbed clean (someone mentioned this in the errata). I can
format sda1, sdb1, sdc1 and sdc5 without problem.
The memory has tested good in the past, but I haven't hit it with a test
lately. I've kept the machine on a UPS most of it's life to minimize power
related problems, but the IDE has failed on the MB. ( I am using a SIIG IDE
paddle board, and have disabled the on-board IDE).
System is:
Processor type (i386/i486/Pentium/...): Dual Pentium 133
Amount of RAM: 128
Monitor: Compaq P50
Video card:
Manufacturer: STB
Model: Velocity 128
Amount of memory: 8 MB
Hard disks:
Type (IDE/SCSI) Size
SCSI 4 GB Seagate ST15150N
SCSI 1 GB Digital DSP3107LS
SCSI 1 GB Digital DSP3107LS
Other expansion cards:
SIIG IDE card (Port 1 set to INT 14, Port 2 Disabled) (CD-ROM)
Adaptec AHA2940 BIOS 1.23 (hard disks)
Adaptec AHA1542CF BIOS 2.01 (tape drive)
Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE64
3Com 3c905-TX
Other peripherals:
Creative Labs 8X IDE CDROM Drive
Hewlett Packard HP35470A DAT Drive
motherboard: Intel M54E Dual Pentium
I setup the partitions as:
sda1 / 156M
sda5 /usr 2784M
sda6 /usr/src 517M
sda7 /usr/local 502M
sda8 swap 125M
sdb1 /home 1020M
sdc1 /var 100M
sdc5 /tmp 100M
After setting this up in disk druid, the swap partition is
formatted, and then I select all of the others for formatting.
I check to box to check for bad blocks during format. sda1
formats, followed by sdb1, sdc1, sdc5, and then sda5. After
chewing on sda5 for 5-10 minutes, the system stops with the
following printed across the formatting (Making EXT2
filesystem on /dev/sda5) screen:
Received signal 11
sending terminate signal...done
sending kill signal...done
unmounting file systems
/tmp/rhimage
/proc
I've looked through the errata, and only found a few entries. One mentioned
removing all partitions and starting from scratch, so I got rid all existing
partitions (and EISA Config partition, a Boot Manager partition, and an
800MB DOS partition).
Others have mentioned bad memory. I haven't tested it yet (don't know if I
still have any of Norton tools around).
All help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
