New PII, HD on primary IDE cable, cdrom as master and Seagate TR-4 tape
drive (4GB uncompressed) as slave on secondary IDE cable. System locally
purchased.

Apparent failure of cdrom (little use, about 3 months after delivery of
system). Back to shop: tech finds the tape drive has failed. Without
tape drive in system the cdrom is ok. Both cdrom and tape drive normal
when system new. I did the switches master/slave, cdrom out of the
system, etc. No question. The tape drive is bad.

A neighbor with Gateway system same general setup -- same apparent cdrom
failure -- again actually failure of the Seagate TR-4 tape drive.

Seagate completely helpful. Sending me SCSI TR-4 drive no extra charge,
so I don't have any kick. This is just information.

I've ordered a Mylex BT 930 SCSI controller. Anybody out there have one
of these? It uses BusLogic drivers. Is it going to be ok? It's cheap at
$70, I think.
