I'm trying to install redhat 5.1 on a Dell 486D/33 (DX-33)-
The first problem I had was that it doesn't have a cd-rom-and windows NT won't
view the filenames properly when trying to use it as an FTP server to load
redhat, because of the trans.tbl file-but that's a different story. I made a
dos boot disk to log into my domain-made a FAT16 partition large enough to get
the redhat directory on it-and it will install great off of the hard drive.
The real problem is that I have to use a drive overlay (Maxblast) because the
bios will not detect a drive over 508 MB (Pheonix bios v. 1.01 A13). Maxblast
will actually load lilo, and give me the choice to boot dos or linux, so lilo
seems to be working. When the kernel is booting, right after it mounts the
root filesystem as read-only, I get unccorrectable errors and ide irq timeout
errors, it will say "ide0 reset success" a few times and then continue to
boot, but also stating that it is delaying the load of my nic drivers, and I
get these errors when doing a "make dep ; make clean" so I can't compile the
kernel either. Since it was obviously made for dos-could the Maxblast EZ BIOS
software be messing with Linux? If so-is there anything else I can use, or is
this a common problem with old Dells and Linux? Any info would be great-Thanks
