I am running a statically linked kernel because doing anything else
resulted in pages of messages when I booted up a new kernel which DID
support modularity. Here is what some of the message stream looked like:

It's this last one that's apparently trying to tell me something. Now, I
followed the instructions in the printed manual and have tried this
process several times.
Is this supposed to work or not?
My system had been running 2.1 and was quite stable. I upgraded primarily
because it was becoming impossible to find RPMs that worked with the older
revision (and yes, I tried loading a newer RPM at one point, and that had
caused MASSIVE problems, so I decided against a piecemeal upgrade). The
system is SCSI based, and I have SCSI support linked in at this point.
The main reason I built a kernel rather than running your canned one was
that the initial kernel didn't activate my Tulip-based Proteon Ethernet
card. Since this machine is a web server, that's not too good...
