At home, I connect to my ISP using the Point to Point Protocol (PPP), as
almost everyone else I think.
PPP connection is handled through the ppp daemon (pppd), so I think you
should read its man page and its references (type  man pppd  at the bash
prompt), as well as the HOWTO-- I think there's a PPP-HOWTO somewhere in
the /usr/doc/HOWTO directory).
Even so, I think every ISP can have it's own configuration set for
PPP... I got mine from the ISP to which I connect... ask yours for the
PPP configuration options to pass to pppd.
