What most people do, including me, is set the system to boot into run-
level 5.  Then your Xauthority problems will be taken care of 
automatically.  I used to not like this -- being a command-line kinda guy --
:)) but after a while I realized I spent most of my time in X anyway, so . . .
it was worth it to get exmh, which has to run in X anyway, not to complain 
about this.
