Boot your computer into MSDOS mode. Insert the floppy that came
with the card and run the program pnpdsabl.exe. Now that PNP is
disabled, run the program 3C5X9CFG.EXE. In there, choose IRQ 5
and I/O 0300-030F.
I am assuming those io/irq settings will be available for your
card (check in Win95 first).
Run the diagnostics. It should pass.
Now boot Windows 95. It should not detect the card. Go to control
panel, system, network adapters. Remove the card which should be
3C509B in PNP mode.
Now go to add new hardware, and install the card. Use 3C509BTP in
ISA Mode (not EISA). Go to control panel, network, add a new
adapter. Choose this new one. Delete the old PNP one.
Highlight the new 3C509B in ISA mode adapter; go to properties,
resources. Be sure you change the i/o to be 0300-030F. Mine gave
me no irq choice at this point, but it worked fine. Exit
control panel. Allow Wkindows 95 to reboot and test the card in
Win 95. It MUST work in Win95 first or Win95 will mess with it
and then Linux will not work.
It should work. Ping the world and make sure its okay.
Now, go to Linux. It should detect the card at bootup. Use dmsg
to view the messages if not. Linux should detect it a 0x300,5 with
no problems.
You have several alternatives:
Pass a parameter to the net card module, NOT at the LILO prompt,
if you use modules. I do not use modules, but have amonolithic
kernel, so I don't have details, but its something like this:
insmod 3c50o9b.o ether,0x340,10,eth0. (use your real settings)
Or use a monolithic kernel and compile in the support for the
3C509B.
I just configured my new Computer here with 3C509BTPO card, Windows
95, pnpdsable, 3c5x9cfg, etc. and it came up beautifully at
0x300,5 and Linux RedHat 5.2 detected it just fine.
Cheers.
