Module Confusion

I was doing a re-compile of the latest kernel and started adding/deleting a few
items. After do the compile I discovered that my network wasn't working any
more!
After a lot of messing around I finally discovered the problem was that I had
changed my ne card support from a module to inline. Modprobe wasn't finding
the module and my good old eth1 wasn't being recognized.
I thought that the compile would resolve all these types of issues. Where do I
find out (and modify) the list of modules that are being installed???
