I haven't gotten around to using NIS yet, but from what I read, the
newer kernels are supposed to do a better job.  2.0.32 was almost
definitely a sub-ideal kernel for this, 2.0.36 might be better, but NIS
is one of the features that always gets mentioned whenever anybody talks
about the 2.2 kernel.  So it might be worth your while to experiment
with the latest of the 2.1 series; my experiences with the 2.1's have
been few but favorable.
