Did you check your XF86Config file to make sure that you're using Xkb?
There's a line something like "XkbDisable."  Make sure it's not set.

This was also posted a few days ago and it worked fine for me.

as root,
edit /usr/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap, adding the line:
keycode 22 = BackSpace
