mine looks like:
S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty ttyS0 F38400 vt100
                                    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ thats what you need
I use run level 5 normally (xdm started up) hence the 5, I don't
use run level 4 but it does not hurt anything here.  mgetty did not seem
to work for me.

com1 is ttyS0 not S1.  when ever I have gotton the  "respawining too fast"
message it has been when an inittab line is messed up
