Athena Design Previews the Mesa Developer Object Kit (Mesa DOK)
November 20, 1995 - Boston - Athena Design, Inc., makers of the
Mesa family of spreadsheet products, is previewing the Mesa
Developer Object kit (Mesa DOK) which allows a developer to
integrate full spreadsheet functionality into any custom
application. Corporate developers, consultants and Independent
Software Vendors (ISV's) can use Mesa DOK to build more powerful
applications while saving development time and resources.
"Mesa DOK fulfills many of the promises that object technology
advocates have made," said David Pollak, President of Athena
Design. "With little work, a programmer can integrate
spreadsheet functionality into his or her application. We are
excited to be at the forefront of delivering powerful object
technology."
Mesa DOK, currently in beta testing for the OS/2 platform and in
development for other platforms, is an example of how
object-oriented software provides developers with the ability to
produce more powerful applications with less work. Developers
can integrate Mesa's 32-bit spreadsheet objects ranging from a
simple table view to a full-fledged, multi-threaded
recalculating spreadsheet and minimize programming time and
cost. To learn more about the DOK beta program please send email
to info@athena.com or call 617-426-6372.
The unsupported preview version of the Mesa DOK for OS/2 is
available for downloading from the Internet at
ftp://ftp.athena.com/ beginning today. Mesa DOK for OS/2 is
scheduled to ship commercially in the first quarter of 1996.
With as few as 20 lines of programming code, application
developers or ISVs can embed Mesa DOK objects in their
applications. Mesa DOK supports a wide variety of
spreadsheet-related tasks including:
*Creating two- and three-dimensional matrices of cells, ranging
in size from a single cell to over 12 trillion cells (18,272
columns by 999,999 rows by 702 layers);
*Populating cells with numbers, text, one- or two-dimensional
arrays, or formulas;
*Setting foreground and background colors, fonts, display
formats, and other formatting elements;
*Displaying graphs, shapes, and rectangular ranges of cells
within a window;
*Accepting user events, such as mouse-clicks, within a window;
*Two-way data transfer from files, real-time data feeds, and
other I/O devices;
*File exchanging with popular spreadsheet formats including
Excel, 1-2-3, and Quattro Pro;
Mesa is a full-featured, 32-bit spreadsheet offering huge, three
dimensional workbooks. It also provides unlimited undo/redo and
multi-threaded recalculation. Mesa includes many unique
usability features including SmartFill<TM>, Formula
Inheritance<TM> and drag and drop color and fonts. Mesa also
supports real-time data feeds from a variety of sources
including financial markets.
Athena Design has been creating object based spreadsheets since
1992. Using these core objects has provided faster time to
market and an accelerated release schedule for product
enhancements. Athena produces award winning spreadsheet
software for both OS/2 and NEXTSTEP and was the first
spreadsheet provider to offer a spreadsheet object library to
application developers. Athena Design can be reached in Boston
at 1-617-426-6372 or at info@athena.com.
